Consulting Day 2020
The Consulting Day tooks place in January at RWTH Aachen University. The competence centre MINT-L4@RWTH took part of it.
The Consulting Day addressed to pupils, who are interested studying a STEM-subject in lectureship. Due to that, there were information flyer for the subjects lectureship in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Phyics and Engineering. Moreover, a lot of presentations and lectures have made the Consulting Day very exciting and interesting. Both the lecture "Lehramt im MINT-Bereich" and the lecture "Was ist MINT-Didaktik?" were not only well-frequented, but gave an overview about contents and aspects about didactics and lectureships.
Symposium 2020
For the first time, a symposium on the role of mathematics in the STEM subjects was conducted in January 2020, attended by nearly 100 teachers, students and university staff. In addition to a keynote lecture by Prof. Dr. Martin Frank (KIT Karlsruhe) on "The Role of Mathematics in Modelling", various workshops were offered. In between there was also an intensive exchange of ideas between the participants at different thematic tables.
Events 2019
Pupils-University STEM-lectureship
This year as well, the STEM Education Student University took place in which 14 interested senior grade students participated in STEM studies in education. The participants gathered first impressions into STEM-education in computer science, mathematics, technology, chemistry and physics.
For one week, the participants took the role of a teacher and dealt with a variety of contents of the five subjects. Furthermore, they developed learning stations in teamwork, which were tested with invited younger students.
The highlight of this Student University was a field trip which took place on the final day. Together with two Student University supervisors the participants went to the Continium in Kerkrade. There, the students witnessed how real professionals develop learning units and returned to taking the role of learners.
Student Workshop "Discover STEM"
As part of the Pupils-University STEM-lectureship, 14 children between the ages of 10-12 have attended the student workshop "Discover STEM". At different stations, the students can get to know the world of science in a special way: perform experiments, encode messages, program apps and much more. During the explorations they were cared for by high school students.
Girl’s Day – "Es leuchtet, piepst und bewegt sich“
„It is blinking, beeping and moving- Improving the World through Technology“ this was the motto of this year‘s Girls’ Day, which was organized by the competence center MINT-L4@RWTH Aachen.
In the first Chemistry workshop the girls grew a piezo crystal which they could take home. Additionally, they got familiar with the structure of solid matter and learned how to draw their structure using their own artistic skills.
In physics the girls constructed different circuits. They used breadboards, LEDs, resistors and a battery as a current supply.
The girls took their circuits to the third part of the workshop, the computer Science workshop, in order to program them by using a microcontroller. They let the LEDs lighten up, blink and they even managed to control them by using a small button. At the end, the girls got a piezoelectric signal generators, which consists of such crystals that were similar to those they grew in the chemistry part of the workshop and programmed them as well.
Didacta Excursion
The Competence Center has offered a voluntary excursion for all interested students to the education fair called Didacta in Cologne. Future teachers had a great opportunity to learn about current issues and challenges facing the education industry.
Background:
The didacta is Europe's largest education trade fair with over 800 exhibitors from around 40 countries. In addition to the exhibition there is an event and congress programme comprising 1,000 forums, workshops, lectures, seminars, special events and podium discussions.
RWTH consulting day: „Weißt du schon, was du studieren willst?“
„Weißt du schon, was du studieren willst?“ ("Do you know what you willing to study?") was the motto of the consultation day, which was organized by the Central Student Advisory Service of the RWTH Aachen University. More than 6,000 prospective students visited the event in order to obtain information and advice for their future studies.
The centre was part of the Consulting Day by providing essential information and giving two talks:
- Mrs. Prof. Heinke: Lehramt im MINT-Bereich
- Mrs. Prof Heitzer: Was ist eigentlich MINT-Didaktik

Lehrertag Mathematik
The fifth Teacher Training Day Mathematics took place at the RWTH Aachen on Saturday, October 6th 2018. More than 100 teachers and students attended the training, which was supported by the Competence Center of the University. The main speaker was Prof. Dr. Dr. Markus Hohenwarter (Linz). In six different workshops on current topics and developments in school mathematics, there was the opportunity to exchange views and insights into current offers from universities and publishers.
The Pupils-University STEM-lectureship: Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics
For the third time, the center offered the Pupils-University STEM-lectureship during the last week of summer vacation. Almost 20 students were able to discover the exciting world of STEM subjects. In physics and chemistry students conducted experiments, in computer science they could write compute programs and tried to encode messages in mathematics. The participants became familiar with the characteristics of the STEM-lectureship and could inspire younger pupils for STEM subjects.
Girl’s Day – the Girls Future Day
MINT-L4 offered the workshop “Es leuchtet, piepst und bewegt sich, mit Technik die Welt verbessern“ from the sections of Chemistry, Computer Science and Physics for STEM-interested pupils at the nationwide Girl’s Day on Thursday, 26th April 2018.
Background:
The Girls' Day has taken place in Germany since 2011. Female school students, between 11 and 16 years old, have the opportunity to take a look at a number of interesting work and career fields.
RWTH Consulting Days in January 2018
The centre was part of the Consulting Day by providing essential information and giving two talks:
- Mrs. Prof. Heinke: Lehramt im MINT-Bereich
- Mrs. Prof Heitzer: Was ist eigentlich MINT-Didaktik?

STEM Education Student University 2017
This year as well, the STEM Education Student University took place in which seven interested senior grade students participated in STEM studies in education. The participants gathered first impressions into STEM-education in computer science, mathematics and physics.
For one week, the participants took the role of a teacher and dealt with a variety of contents of the three subjects.
108th MNU-Federal Congress 2017 at RWTH
Thanks to intermediation of Prof. Heitzer by the competence centre MINT-L4 the 108th MNU-Federal Congress will be hosted by RWTH Aachen University at the new lecture hall centre “C.A.R.L. “ in April 2017.
STEM-GirlsDay 2017
„It is blinking, beeping and moving- Improving the World through Technology“ this was the motto of this year‘s Girls’ Day, which was organized by the competence center MINT-L4@RWTH Aachen. Thirteen highly motivated girls participated in this Workshop and obtained an introduction to the subjects Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science.
The workshop started with Chemistry, where the girls grew a piezo crystal, which they were allowed to keep. Additionally, they got familiar with the structure of solid matter and learned how to draw their structure using their own artistic skills.
In physics, the girls constructed different circuits, where they used breadboards, LEDs, resistors and a battery as a current supply. They noticed quickly why they needed a resistor after the first LED blew up, smelled strange and did not light any more - it was burnt out! The girls took their circuits to the third part of the workshop, which was computer Science, in order to program them using a microcontroller. They quickly let the LEDs lighten up, blink and they even managed to control them using a small button. At the end, the girls got a piezoelectric signal generator, which consists of crystals similar to those they grew in the chemistry part of the workshop. The signal generator was not only programmed but also it was beeping.
