The 108th MNU Federal Congress 2017 at RWTH
The 108th Federal Congress of the Association for the Promotion of the STEM Education (MNU) ended with a great success. More than 160 Talks and Workshops were presented and have been visited by around 1000 teachers from all over Germany.
The most important aspects that have been addressed during this congress are: the “young professional teachers’ day”, the panel discussion about digital tools with experts from different sectors like: Schools, universities and the NRW ministry of education in addition to the contribution of the Federal Executive Board to the Common European Framework of Reference for natural sciences.
Moreover, one of the main issues that has been discussed during this year’s congress is sustainability. The vision is to offer the STEM-Lessons in the schools in a modern and innovative way. Accordingly, attempts will be made to substitute the classical worksheets with digital tools taken into considerations the interest of students in digital media as has been emphasized by the minister of education, Mrs. Sylvia Löhrmann in her greetings.
In addition to the above-mentioned points, a variety of different programs and a number of interesting events have taken place such as: “Learning and Teaching Materials” exhibitions and physics science show which was presented in the new RWTH C.A.R.L auditorium building.

The MNU and the RWTH Aachen University invite you to join the 108th MNU-Federal Congress in the imperial city of Aachen from Thursday, 6th April till Monday, 10th April 2017. The auspice has been assumed by Prime Minister Ms. Kraft.
Friday morning the congress will ceremonially be opened. The school minister of Northrhine-Westfalia Sylvia Löhrmann and substitutes of Municipality and University will give a welcome speech. Moreover, there will be presentations of awards and lectures from the MNU-Association.
The conference-highlights are, among others, lectures by two of our Leibniz-Awardees and appearances by the Physikanten.
Special parts of the congress are an integrated conference for young teachers and sections about the topics “Cross-Overs”, new media technology and “BeNeLux-STEM-Education”. In addition, impulses in sustainability are to be set.
Except the subject-related and interdisciplinary discussion, this means to us: reduction of print products, public-transport-tickets for all participants, organic catering products as well as publication of the congress results. Sustainability in STEM education processes is part of the ceremonial speech.

Site-visit
Thanks to intermediation of Prof. Heitzer by the competence centre MINT-L^4 the 108th MNU-Federal Congress will be hosted by RWTH Aachen University at the new lecture hall centre “C.A.R.L.” in April 2017.
The first site-visit took place in autumn 2015 together with Ms. Christine Wulfert (RWTH-Construction Management), Prof. Johanna Heitzer (MINT-L^4@RWTH and chairwoman of the MNU local board), Ms. Nikola Herzberg (chief of construction), Dr. Christian Salinga (MINT-L^4@RWTH) and Jürgen Langlet (MNU Federal chairman).
The MNU is one of Germany’s largest subject teacher associations, which is active in 18 federal associations all over the country. It represents the interests of teachers for Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Astronomy and Computer Science of all school forms. The support association was founded in 1891 and has had big influence on the development of STEM education in Germany. The competence centre MINT-L^4@RWTH is looking forward to welcoming the MNU guests of 2017 in Aachen.
