Organisation of lectures

 

Due to the huge flexibilty of lessons, a careful organization of lectures and internships is required.

The following page explains the organisation of lecutures and gives advises how to organise the schedule.

 

Organisation of lectures

Specification
There are four different field of specifications, which go along with the Universit'ys main research fields.

Out of the four fields, two have to be chosen.

SYN - Bioactive compounds and synthetic methods
CAT - Catalysis
MES - materials and mesoscopic systems: solids, polymers and nanostructures
COS - computational chemistry and spectroscopy

In each field, three modules and one internship have to be completed.

Furthermore, there have to be:

  • one lecture that can be chosen out of all specification fields
  • a research internship out of all specification fields
  • a lecture of the University's curriculum; e.g. Maths, Biology, a language. 3 CPs have at least to be earned

Summary of an ideal schedule

During semester 1 to 3

  • 6+6 compulsory lectures of both specification fields
  • 3+3 non-compulsory lecture of both specification fields
  • 1 lecture out of any specification field
  • 1 not chemistry-related lecture of the University's curriculum
  • 1+1 research internship and report in the chosen specification fields
  • 1 research internship and report in a non-chosen specification field or compulsory homework-module COS

Semester 4

  • Master-Thesis in one of the chosen specification fields

Explanation of terms

Module

A module contains two compulsory lectures and one non-compulsory lecture. In this case, a non-compulsory lecture is a lecture that is free to chose out of the respective specification field.

Research internships

A research internship is carried out in each of the specification fields. Furthermore, one research internship must take place in one of the non-chosen specification fields. In general this means, that three research internships have to be completed. Each internship takes 30 days of work. At the end, a report has to be written.

However, if the specification field COS was chosen, only two research internships in the respective specification fields are necessary. Instead of a research internship in a non-chosen specification field, COS-students have to do homework for some lectures.

There are three ways to carry out a research internship:

  • to work on a project in a group at RWTH Aachen University which fits both to ones interests and to the specification field
  • industrial research internship
  • research internship abroad

Pleace notice that research internships require careful organisation. This means that the contact to a group has to be established early enough in order to prevent loss of time.
Especially internships abroad or in industry need to be planned in advance because it is impossible to visit lectures during that time.

 

Steps to organise the schedule

1. Selection of specification fields

First, two specification fields should be chosen. This depends on personal interests and skills.

In case of difficulties to chose, the desciptions of the respective lectures might be helpful.

After the selection of specification fields, the compulsory lectures are chosen.

2. Non-compulsory lectures

Also in this case, the personal interest and skills are most important. Furthermore, the timing of lectures has to be considered: there are some lectures that are only held every second year. The respective lectures are listed on this page.

3. Planning of semesters

  • Where and when should my research internships take place?
  • Do I want to go abroad?

As explained in a previous section, studies abroad or internships in industry make it impossible to visit lectures here. Therefore, such activities have to be planned in advance in order to prevent any difficulties.
